With so many people interested in the healing properties of herbs, many companies are now selling bulk herbs. It is essential, as a consumer, to make sure that the bulk herbs that are purchased are of the highest quality. Using substandard herbs, can take the benefits away from the natural healing that consumers are searching for.

What To Look For In Bulk Herbs

Many companies are now in the market of selling bulk herbs. These herbs can be located on the Internet or at a health food store; some farmers markets also will carry bulk herbs. The first important step when purchasing bulk herbs is to determine if they were organically grown. Most growers understand the importance of organically grown herbs and are producing quality organic grown herbs. Verify the company’s standards in regards to organic farming. Ask what types of fertilizer have been used and inquire about their growing techniques. If you can get references from other people as to the quality of the product, this can help in determining where to shop for bulk herbs.

When looking at the herbs that are offered, pay close attention to the quality. Does the herb smell fresh? What color are the herbs, does it look fresh? Herbs need to be stored in a dark place in order to maintain their potency, find out how these herbs have been stored. Are the herbs chopped? Most herbs need to remain whole to have the strongest effect. Chopping can be done after the purchase has been made and many stores will actually assist with this process.

After selecting the bulk herbs, it may be the best time to have them chopped and bottled. Being able to do this process immediately helps in the storing of the bulk herbs. Make sure to be prepared and know what you are going to do with the bulk herbs. Many herbs are used in the creation of teas. The herb will need to be chopped finely enough for tea, having it done at the store will definitely cut down on your own work time. Talk with the supplier about possible storage methods in case you’re not sure what your immediate needs will be. Most suppliers can offer good suggestions on keeping the herbs fresh and ready for use.

Bulk herbs are a great way to save money. There are many locations that now sell herbs in this form. Take the time to discover which companies are selling the best quality at the best price.

If you’re looking to start your own garden, whether indoor or outdoor, you should consider growing herbs. Not only are these plants fragrant, giving off a pleasant smell, but growing your own herbs allows you to have fresh ones whenever you need some to cook with. Because herbs are usually better fresh, a garden of them is one way to ensure that you’ll always have them on hand and in their peak condition. Let’s look at some of the herbs that you could grow in your garden.

Basil

One of the most popular and versatile herbs, basil is used worldwide in a variety of cooking applications. Basil goes particularly well with tomatoes, which is why this is one of the herbs often included in Italian dishes that feature tomato sauces. But varieties of basil are valued in many Thai dishes as well for their pungent aroma and great flavor. Harvesting the leaves regularly on a basil plant actually encourage new growth on the plant, so this plant is ideal for an herb garden that you can maintain all season.

Rosemary

Unlike many other herbs, rosemary resembles an evergreen bush more than any other plant, with little needle-like leaves. If you’ve ever smelled a pine tree, though, you know that evergreen-type plants tend to have very noticeable scents, and rosemary shares this characteristic. Other than the great smell it gives off, this herb goes great in lamb dishes and with rice. Many herbs have medicinal properties, and rosemary is no exception, acting as a muscle relaxant in small amounts, though too much will leads to stomach irritation.

Chives And Scallions

You may not know it, but the plants in the onion family are herbs, too! This is most apparent for chives and scallions, which resemble chives. In both cases, the plants tend to form leaves that are almost round and hollow in the middle. Cut into small pieces, they add mild onion flavor to a variety of dishes, from French cooking, where chive is important, to Asian cuisine, where the scallion shines. In addition to being great for cooking, the juice from the leaves repels insects, making it useful for those looking to do some organic gardening.

As can be seen, herbs come in a variety of shapes and have a wide variety of uses, from food to medicine to natural insect repellents. With such a wide range of applications, a small garden, indoors or out, for herbs will allow you to have their versatility at your fingertips. So, get to your local gardening store and get started on growing your own!

For many centuries, the human race is aware of the utilization of herbs and their uses for medicinal and other purposes. Now the question arises, what are these so called herbs? An herb is a small plant with numerous nutrients and phytochemicals. It is very beneficial to the well being of all living beings and has now gained its importance in the modern world of medicines. Origin The ancient traces of herbs and their uses can be found back in the manuscripts of the 10th century. It is very important to understand during those times people believed in superstitions and believed in strength of natural power and god. Many manuscripts by Saxons, in particular, have clearly mentioned different herbs and their uses and advocated using them for all remedial purposes.

Discovery There are millions of them on earth. Each herb has its own utilization and some value. Jalap, Knotweed, Hemp and Elecampane are just a few examples of the herbs easily available. Most of them are grown wild and were discovered many centuries ago through observations and research. Today modern science is just confirming the utility of these herbs and their uses and manufacturing medicines on larger scales. Utility Different herbs have different uses. Herbs and their uses are varied for each different variety of herb. Herbs like Scotch Broom, Cotton Thistle, Fuller’s Teasel and Hop etc are all ornamental plant and used in homes and other places for decorations. Thus they are grouped as household plant.

Each herb in this group has a very distinct and attractive feature in it. Marsh Mallow, Hollyhock, Meadow Clary, and Comfrey etc are few herbs which have medicinal value they are used to treat diseases in all living being and hence grouped under medicinal plants. There is another category of plants which are termed as aromatic plants.

Vervain, Cupid’s Dart, Costmary and Orris are few example of it. These herbs have distinct aroma of their own which acts as a characteristic feature to them. Then another kind of plants namely kitchen and seasoning herbs like Cardoon, Samphire, Leaved Basil and Winter Savory etc ,these are used as flavors and spices in food. Agrimony, Greater Celandine, Marguerite, Our – Lady’s Bedstraw, Madder etc are horticulture plants and still are used as that only.

These all were used by medieval artist centuries ago. Chaste Tree, Wild Strawberry and Meadow Rue etc are another group associated with love and marriage. The magical herbs are another type of herbs which include Ragged – Robin, English Ivy and Bear’s Foot etc. This group of herbs could treat almost any illness be it stomach ache, headache, teeth ache, muscle strain etc. All the herbs found and discussed above are being used from medieval age and now have found their feet in the medicine industry. All these treat the illness very naturally without any side effects and thus have gained so much popularity. These are not very fast remedies but sure shot remedies for sickness of all kinds.

There are many kinds of herbs and spices. Most of these are used for cooking and medicinal remedies. Herbs have a less strong taste than spices. Some people might like a list of herbs and spices that are used for cooking.

A List of Herbs and Spices

Here is a list of herbs and spices commonly used for cooking. Allspice, anise, basil, bay leaves, caraway seeds, cardamom seed, celery seed, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, cumin, dill seed, fennel, fenugreek, ginger, mace, marjoram, mint, mustard, nutmeg, oregano, paprika, parsley, black and white pepper, poppy seed, red pepper, rosemary, saffron, sage, savory, sesame seed, sweet pepper flakes, tarragon, thyme, turmeric.

The herbs and spices listed above are all very good for enhancing the taste and smell of foods and other dishes. The list of herbs and spices above is not the complete family of herbs and spices available to people but they are some of the more commonly used in the kitchen to add to our everyday foods.

Tips for Herbs and Spices

It is best to store all kinds of herbs and spices in a cool, dark place far from heat and light sources. Dried herbs and spices do not go bad but they do lose their potency if not used for a long time. Seeds like poppy and sesame turn rancid if left for a while. Most of the whole herbs and spices usually retain their flavor for about a year. Dried and ground herbs and spice are best consumed within six months of the buying date.

Crushing dried herbs in the palms of your hands before adding them to the food makes them more flavorful. Most dried herbs can be substituted with one teaspoon of the dried herb with one tablespoon of chopped fresh herb. Some of the items in the list of herbs and spice above can also be utilized for medicinal purposes and remedies. Most of our medicines today come from herbs and spice and other plants.

Keeping a list of herbs and spices and their uses can be a useful thing to study or even have in the kitchen. Sometimes, experimenting with food and the various herbs and spices available to us can yield fantastic results and also really weird tasting food. You can always read about which herbs and which spices can do what or add flavor to which food but actually tasting it can open your eyes to possibilities.

Natural herbs and other forms of homeopathic medicines have been used for centuries. Before there were antibiotics, people relied on the earth’s natural resources to promote healing. Today, many have realized the benefits of these treatments and are stepping back in time to find a more natural way to heal and stay healthy.

What Do Natural Herbs Do?

There are many different natural herbs used for a variety of illnesses, even for weight loss. Natural herbs can be found at any store that carries a line of homeopathic health improvement products or on the Internet.

A few of the herbs that are used in many different aspects of the natural healing program include Goldenseal, which is used as an antibiotic. It can be steeped and made into a tea. Chamomile is another well-known herb. It is used to help with upset stomachs, to calm nerves and to speed up healing. This is another of the natural herbs that can be used in a tea form. Many people have heard that Garlic contains many factors that help promote healing, lower cholesterol and generally improve health. Garlic is easy to use in almost any foods as an additional seasoning. Raspberry leaf is thought to help uterine distress and prevent miscarriage. Many pregnant women drink this in the morning to help with morning sickness.

Some herbs are thought to help maintain a person’s physical well being by controlling the toxins that are in the body. Some of the natural herbs that help the body eliminate these toxins are green tea, turmeric, ginkgo, grape seed, pine bark, milk thistle and aloe vera. All of these natural herbs are considered important to keeping the body in balance to prevent illnesses.

There are also natural herbs found in weight loss products to help speed up metabolism and help a person loose weight. Of course, just using these alone will not necessarily benefit a person; an exercise program also needs to be used to assist the body in losing weight. These natural herbs can be found in weight loss products offered at health food stores. Some of the natural herbs that are believed to help in weight loss include Bitter Orange, Cayenne, Green Tea and St. Johns Wort. The herb Ephedra is often used in natural weight loss supplements. It has been linked to cardiac arrest in several cases, and should be evaluated on an individual case basis. Check with a physician before using this herb.

More and more people use natural herbs everyday. People are trying to discover a healthier alternative to pharmaceuticals, and natural herbs may be the solution people are seeking.

Though you might want an herb garden, you may also have some worries about some of the chemicals and other products that gardening stores try to sell for gardens. Whether it’s out of a worry for your own health, for that of the environment, or other reasons, you might choose to grow organic herbs, instead. Growing organic herbs is actually fairly easy to do, especially since some herbs are naturally used as plants in organic gardening already. Let’s take a look at some techniques for growing organic herbs.

Plants As Insect Repellent

One of the great things about herbs is that many of them have already evolved natural protection against insects that like to feed on them. For instance, the chive plant has chemicals that discourage feeding; it’s these same compounds that give chives and other members of the onion family the bit that makes them taste great. This makes chives great for planting for organic herbs, since they won’t require insecticides to be sprayed.

Even better, the juice from chives, when sprayed on other plants, can discourage insects from landing and feeding. Other plants have this property as well, such as members of the pepper family; a spray made from the juices of peppers will also work well.

Plants To Attract Insects

Interestingly enough, the use of other herbs in organic gardening to attract certain insects is also an effective technique. By helping to attract insects like ladybugs who feed on insects that are harmful to plants, you can effectively recruit your own little army to guard your organic herbs. For instance, borage is particularly good for attracting insects, and also makes a great companion plant in vegetable gardens, improving the taste of tomatoes grown nearby.

Compost

Since those who grow organic herbs don’t want to use chemical fertilizers to help their plants to grow, you need to find other ways to fertilize the soil. Luckily, the solution lies in your garbage! Composting consists of allowing biodegradable materials to break down naturally, which creates a nutrient-rich soil that can be used in your garden. By starting a compost pile, you will have a rich source of natural fertilizer on hand and less to haul out on trash day each week. As can be seen, the best way to grow organic herbs is to use what you have at hand to naturally encourage plants to grow healthy and to discourage natural predators of these plants to seek other places to feed.
